Mauna Kea Hotel

Beautifully manicured landscaping at Mauna Kea ResortThe very first hotel to sprout on the rugged lava of the Kohala Coast, the Mauna Kea Beach Hotel reopened in December 2008 after a two-year overhaul, prompted by the October 2006 earthquake. The structure of Lawrence Rockefeller’s 1965 landmark was strengthened, but the closure also gave designers a chance to overhaul a dated interior with roomier floor plans, chic candy colors and high-tech gadgets. Mandara Spa will premiere March 20, 2009; the resort’s grand reopening celebration is set for March 26-29. Introductory nightly rates start at $375.
