This
beach park is located on the site of the original Kona Airport which
closed in 1970. Today, the runway is the parking lot for this mile
long beach. The white sand is surrounded by large lava rocks and
tide pools which block the ocean's waves. The beach park
encompasses over 100 acres and features a lava rock covered beach area
with picnic tables, showers, bathroom facilities, tennis courts, and
palm trees.
While
certainly not the prettiest Kona beach, it is conveniently located right
at the edge of Kailua town. There is good snorkeling and diving
nearby in Pawai Bay. It is a short walk north of this beach park
to the second cove. This is at the edge of Pawai Bay, and if the
water conditions permit a shore entry, you will find excellent coral and
fish life.
