Mauna
Kea Beach, also known as Kauna'oa Beach is a perfect crescent beach of
white sand surrounded by shady trees and beautifully manicured
landscaping provided by the Mauna Kea Resort. On a clear day, you
can see the majestic volcano of Mauna Kea to
the
South. The beach is long and there is plenty of room to spread
out. The ultra-fine white sand stretches far into the water making
water entry easy. The waters are incredibly clear and inviting.
This cove is protected and a wonderful place to swim and snorkel.
The beach is one of the most beautiful on the island and a great place
to rest, relax, or just walk around; this is a perfect family beach.
Only
30 cars are allowed in the Mauna Kea Resort at a time, which means you
must come early to find a parking spot. You can also take the
1-mile shore-line trail from the north end of Hapuna Beach.
Mauna Kea Hotel
The very first hotel to sprout on the rugged lava of the Kohala
Coast, the Mauna Kea Beach Hotel reopened in December 2008 after a
two-year overhaul, prompted by the October 2006 earthquake. The
structure of Lawrence Rockefeller's 1965 landmark was strengthened, but
the closure also gave designers a chance to overhaul a dated interior
with roomier floor plans, chic candy colors and high-tech gadgets.
Mandara Spa will premiere March 20, 2009; the resort's grand reopening
celebration is set for March 26-29. Introductory nightly rates start at
$375.
